THE BRIDGE OVCIJI BROD

The most famous bridge over the Zalomka is certainly Ovciji brod which dates from the period of the Ottoman rule. It is in Bratac, 15 kilometres east of Nevesinje. Although it is a master-piece of architecture of the time, there are no accurate historical data on its building. It is assumed to have been built by the Ottomans in the sixteenth or the seventeenth century. According to anouther version of the story it was built by a famous Turkish architect Hajrudin, simultaneously with the construction of the Old Bridge in Mostar. For a long time it used to be the only bridge on the Zalomka River. It was named by shepherds, who in the spring led sheep flocks over it from low to high Herzegovina – towards Treskavica, Zelengora and Morine to pasture, and the other way around in the autumn. It was entirely made of stone and is still defying the ravages of time and attracting the attention of visitors.
